The USIM (Universal SSR Interface Module) was designed to consolidate several pieces of bulky equipment (each supplied by a different electric meter manufacturer) into one compact unit.

The USIM uses a telephone modem interface and telephone line ring voltage generator to communicate with phone-modem devices in the absence of a working telephone line.
